Greta oto
Greta otoAlso known as Glasswinged Butterfly
Glasswing butterflies navigate dense rainforest understories on delicate, see-through wings covered in nanopillars that prevent reflection and render them virtually invisible in flight. Males gather in communal display arenas known as leks, where they perch on high vegetation and release chemical pheromones derived from toxic plant alkaloids to entice passing females. Caterpillars feed on poisonous nightshades to store chemical defenses, carrying unpalatability through metamorphosis to deter potential predators.
