Meal Moth

Pyralis farinalis

Also known as Meal Snout Moth, Grain Snout Moth

Meal moths rest with their distinctive abdomens tilted upward at a sharp angle, displaying beautifully contrasting forewings of rich chocolate brown, creamy ochre, and fine white wavy lines. Caterpillars construct durable silken tubes within damp grains, meal, or decomposing hay, feeding inside these tunnels away from light. While notorious as pantry and grain elevator pests across the globe, adults are harmless night-fliers that readily come to artificial lights.

Responsible observation
  • Storage Monitoring: Inspect pantries and pet food bins for silken tubes or webbing if adults appear indoors.
  • Night Observation: Look for adults resting on outdoor walls near porch lights, where their upturned abdomen posture is easy to spot.
  • Airtight Containment: Keep susceptible flour and grain supplies in sealed glass jars to deter breeding.
