Household Casebearer

Phereoeca uterella

Also known as Plaster Bagworm, Wall Moth, Spindle Casebearer

Larvae construct a distinctive, flat, pumpkin seed-shaped case out of silk interwoven with sand grains, lint, and fragments of dead insects. The caterpillar crawls along walls and ceilings by poking its head and legs out of either end of this reversible shelter. While the tiny adult moths are weak fliers that rarely feed, the larvae are famous indoor scroungers that subsist on spiderwebs, shed human hair, and accumulated household fibers.

Harmless to humans and pets; safe to observe at close range.
Responsible observation
  • Look on vertical surfaces: Check plaster walls, baseboards, and shaded outdoor stucco in humid climates.
  • Observe two-way movement: Watch patiently to see the larva flip around inside its case and emerge from the opposite slit.
  • Manage humanely: Relocate stray cases outside or reduce indoor humidity to discourage them naturally.
