Native Budworm

Helicoverpa punctigera

Also known as Australian Bollworm

Native budworms breed en masse across the arid Australian interior following winter rains before riding high-altitude winds hundreds of kilometers toward coastal farming districts. The voracious caterpillars chew directly into developing pods, buds, and flowers of broadacre crops, playing a major ecological and agricultural role across southern Australia. When fully grown, larvae burrow deep into surrounding topsoil to construct silk-lined chambers where they pupate until ideal seasonal conditions return.
