Auckland Tree Weta

Hemideina thoracica

Also known as Tokoriro

Auckland tree wētā spend daylight hours concealed in tree cavities or abandoned beetle galleries, emerging after nightfall to forage among the foliage. Adult males possess disproportionately enlarged heads and elongated mandibles, which they lock together during aggressive wrestling matches over female harems. When disturbed, individuals rear up defensively, waving spiny hind legs overhead and producing a raspy hissing sound by rubbing their leg pegs against the abdomen.

  2. Moderate
  3. High
  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is low
Powerful mandibles and spiny hind legs can deliver a painful pinch if handled.
Why it is dangerous
Large, muscled jaws can pierce skin and draw blood, while the barbed hind legs can scratch aggressively when thrashing.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a robust brown body, banded legs with heavy spines, and males with dramatically swollen, elongated heads.
What to do
Observe without prodding or restraining; if found indoors, gently cup a clear container over the insect and slide cardstock underneath to relocate outside.
Responsible observation
  • Spotting: Check hollow tree branches, rotten logs, or purpose-built wooden wētā motels after dusk with a red-filtered flashlight.
  • Handling: Avoid picking them up directly, as cornered individuals will kick backward with sharp leg spines and bite defensively.
