Wellington Tree Weta

Wellington tree weta are heavy-bodied, flightless orthopterans native to forests and suburban gardens across central New Zealand. Males boast massive, exaggerated mandibles used in head-to-head combat to defend tree cavity galleries containing harems of females. During the night, these nocturnal foragers venture into the canopy to browse on foliage, fruit, and small invertebrates.
