Green-striped Grasshopper

Chortophaga viridifasciata

Also known as Northern Green-striped Grasshopper, Spring Grasshopper

Green-striped grasshoppers are among the earliest orthopterans to mature each spring, having spent the freezing winter as partially grown nymphs beneath leafy debris. Females are typically vibrant green while males tend to be mottled brown, though both sexes showcase the signature green stripe running along the side of the head and wings. When startled from pastures or sunlit lawns, flying males generate a distinctive snapping or crackling sound produced by snapping their hindwings against their forewings.
