Corrugated boletes stand out on the eastern deciduous forest floor with an irregularly dimpled, pitted cap surface that resembles crumpled paper or hammered metal. Underground mycelial networks partner intimately with the root tips of mature oaks and beeches, exchanging water and gathered soil minerals for synthesized sugars. Fruiting bodies typically emerge alone or in scattered groups during warm, humid spells from mid-summer through early autumn.
