Yunnan Woolly Flying Squirrel

Eupetaurus nivamons

Yunnan woolly flying squirrels are massive, dense-furred nocturnal gliders adapted to the frigid crags and high-elevation conifer forests of the eastern Himalayan foothills. Relying on an expansive gliding membrane and a bushy, rudder-like tail, they sail between sheer cliffs and mature fir canopies under cover of darkness. They feed heavily on fibrous pine and fir needles, processing tough alpine foliage with high-crowned cheek teeth uniquely suited to an extreme montane diet.

Why interaction risk is low
Safe to observe at a normal distance.
What to notice
Look for an unusually heavy-bodied squirrel with dense greyish-brown fur, a broad rounded face, and a massive cylindrical tail perched high on subalpine cliffs.
Support conservation
Observe silently from a distance without artificial flash, and keep precise GPS coordinates confidential to protect fragile nesting roosts.
Responsible observation
  • Spotlighting: Search high cliff faces and conifer crowns with red light at night to minimize disturbance.
  • Habitat Clues: Look for accumulations of chewed conifer needle clusters beneath tall fir trees near rocky outcrops.
  • Distance: Maintain a wide berth to avoid startling individuals into risky daytime leaps.
