Roaming the ancient jarrah and marri forests of southwestern Australia, Baudin's black cockatoo relies on its unusually long upper beak to pry seeds out of tough woody capsules. Flocks communicate through heavy canopy with a slow, mournful screeching call that carries over vast distances. These long-lived birds nest exclusively in deep hollows of mature eucalypts, making old-growth tree conservation critical to their survival.
