Squirrel Tree Frog

Dryophytes squirellus

Also known as Rain Frog

Squirrel tree frogs are master shape-shifters of color, transitioning rapidly between bright emerald green and dull brownish-gray depending on moisture, temperature, and background. Named for their harsh, rasping call that sounds remarkably like a scolding gray squirrel, these vocal amphibians gather in noisy choruses around temporary wetlands after warm summer rains. In suburban yards, they frequently gather near outdoor lighting and patio furniture to ambush night-flying insects.

Responsible observation
  • Night Spotting: Search low foliage and porch lights on humid summer evenings after rain.
  • Listen for Calls: Identify them by their rasping, squirrel-like chatter emitted during warm storms.
  • Handle with Care: Use moist hands if contact is necessary, as skin absorbs salts and chemicals.
