Hallowell's Toad
Sclerophrys maculataAlso known as Flat-backed Toad, Striped Toad
Hallowell's toads are adaptable terrestrial amphibians widespread across sub-Saharan savannas, secondary forests, and human settlements. Males gather around shallow temporary puddles or slow-flowing stream margins at dusk during the rainy season, producing harsh, rhythmic croaking choruses to attract mates. During dry spells, they seek refuge under rotting logs, leaf litter, or abandoned termite mounds to conserve moisture.

Interaction riskHigh

- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is high
- Skin secretions contain bufotoxins harmful to dogs and cats; do not ingest and wash hands after handling.
- Why it is dangerous
- Parotoid glands exude bufotoxins containing cardiotoxic steroids that cause severe oral irritation, vomiting, and cardiac arrhythmias if chewed by domestic pets.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a flattened, warty brownish body with paired dark dorsal patches and distinct elongate glands behind the eyes.
- What to do
- Observe without touching; if handling is necessary, wear gloves or wash skin promptly, and keep pets at a distance.
Responsible observation
- Night Observation: Search damp pathways and garden borders with a flashlight after warm seasonal rains.
- Hygiene Protocol: Wash hands thoroughly after handling to prevent transferring skin toxins to eyes or mouth.
- Pet Safety: Keep curious dogs away, as biting the toad can cause foaming and distress.
