Panamint alligator lizards inhabit isolated, spring-fed canyons within eastern California desert mountain ranges. Recognized by their straw-yellow or pale grey background with bold dark crossbands, these secretive reptiles cling to moist microhabitats in an otherwise hyper-arid landscape. They spend much of their lives concealed beneath rocks or dense vegetation near seeps, emerging during cooler daylight hours to hunt small invertebrates.
