Crêpe Ginger

Hellenia speciosa

Also known as Malay Ginger, Spiral Ginger, Cane Reed, Wild Ginger

Crêpe ginger produces striking, spiraling cane-like stems lined with lush dark green foliage, distinguishing it from traditional flat-ranked gingers. From terminal reddish-purple cone-like bracts, delicate white flowers with ruffled, tissue-paper petals and yellow centers emerge one or two at a time. Beneath the soil, thick fibrous rhizomes spread aggressively through moist tropical understories and riverbanks, enabling the plant to colonize disturbed clearings rapidly.
