Band-tailed pigeons travel in noisy, roving flocks across western mountain forests and oak woodlands in search of seasonal acorns, pine seeds, and berries. They gather in large numbers at natural mineral springs to ingest sodium and balance their seed-heavy diet. During the breeding season, males produce a deep, owl-like hooting call that echoes softly through the forest canopy.
