Galápagos Sea Lion
Zalophus wollebaekiAlso known as Galapagos Sea Lion
Galápagos sea lions are playful, vocal pinnipeds famous for sunbathing on docks, sandy beaches, and lava benches throughout the archipelago. Adult males guard harems and patrol coastal waters with deep, guttural barks, vigorously defending stretches of shoreline against rivals. Pups spend their early weeks playing in protected tidal nurseries while mothers forage during daytime feeding trips across surrounding pelagic waters.

Interaction riskHigh

- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is high
- Territorial bulls and protective mothers can charge and deliver severe bites; keep at least two meters away.
- Why it is dangerous
- Adult males defending coastal territory and nursing mothers protecting pups can deliver crushing bites that cause deep puncture wounds and severe bacterial infection.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for large, dark brown animals hauled out on sand or rock, particularly hefty males sporting a raised sagittal crest on their forehead.
- What to do
- Give all individuals a wide berth of at least two meters, never sit on benches occupied by sea lions, and slowly back away if a bull barks or advances.
- What to notice
- Easily recognized as smooth-coated, streamlined sea lions resting on beaches and public benches throughout the Galápagos and Isla de la Plata.
- Support conservation
- Strictly follow Galápagos National Park guidelines by remaining on marked trails, avoiding flash photography, and never attempting to touch or feed individuals.
Responsible observation
- Keep Distance: Maintain a minimum distance of two meters at all times on beaches and docks.
- Do Not Block Paths: Avoid standing between swimming sea lions and their beach access routes.
- Respect Bull Barking: Step away immediately if an adult bull charges or vocalizes toward you.
